The official press release called it “an objectionable background image” - Disney-ese for porn. In 1999, Disney was compelled to recall 3.4 million copies of a video re-release of The Rescuers when pedants noticed that two of the movie’s 100,00 frames featured subliminal images of a bare lady (38 minutes into the film, you filthy animals). Spliced into the films by an anonymous prankster in 1977, the ample bosoms went undiscovered for 22 years.

James R Simon, shame on you. Faced with perpetuating the myth that lemmings commit mass hara-kiri, the director swallowed his ethics and improvised. Buying a bunch of the rodents from local Indians, Simon located a Canadian cliff, herded the mammals to the edge of it, and then nudged them off. Excusable (barely!) if that was their natural behaviour, zoologists are now well aware that lemmings aren’t born with an appetite for self-destruction.
