Sticking Your Oar In - The Celebs Who've Given The Boat Race A Bash
Oxford or Cambridge? You don't have to have gone there - you just got to pick a side!
Oxbridge - no one's sure where it is, but one weekend each year, we're meant to give a damn about how the people that live there entertain themselves.
The Boat Race has been with us since 1829 (Oxford won, in case you were wondering). And during its history, some truly remarkable people have taken part in the mad dash from Putney to Mortlake. Those particularly deserving of recognition include:
Hugh Laurie - If it wasn't enough that he's a published author, an accomplished musician, a trailblazing comic and the star of one of the most popular shows on the planet, James Hugh Callum Laurie was also a gifted rower. His astonishing all-round achievements almost leave you glad Cambridge lost that year by a mere five feet.
Matthew Pinsent - It's no great surprise that one of the sport's greatest names should have taken part in the Boat Race. What's rather more bizarre is that Sir Matthew Pinsent last competed for Oxford in 1993, the year after he and Steve Redgrave won gold in the coxless pairs at a little regatta called the Barcelona Olympics.
