Discovered in the 1870s by the British Challenger mission, the Mariana (or Marianas) Trench is part of a geographical system that marks the boundary between two tectonic plates. The plates in question are the vast Pacific and the much smaller Mariana. Where the Pacific plate sub-ducted (forced down) the Mariana, a vast trench was been formed.
