The Last Emperor
Bernardo Bertolucci made either short, compelling films (The Conformist) or vast, sprawling epics (1900). The 160-minute, multiple Oscar-winning The Last Emperor falls somewhere between the two. Since this is a generation-spanning tale, it’s obliged to take its time. That it never flags is in large part thanks to actors who know only too well how arduous their art can be; step forward Peter O’Toole, who weathered a storm making Lawrence Of Arabia, and John Lone who experienced a blizzard working with Mickey Rourke on Year Of The Dragon.
