Simon Pegg smiles a familiar smile. “You know, the funny thing is, it was never meant to be called Shaun Of The Dead. That was just a punny working title me and Edgar Wright came up with because we’re such big fans of George A Romero’s Dawn Of The Dead. The thing is, once word got out that that was what we were working on, people got in touch to say how much they loved the title. In the end, it was so popular that had we made a sequel, it’d have had to be called something like ‘Dave Of The Dead’.”
With its origins in ‘Art’, the third episode of their trailblazing sitcom Spaced, Shaun Of The Dead would do remarkable things for writer-star Pegg and writer-director Wright. So easily have they made the transfer from Crouch End to California, their position on the Hollywood A-list is pretty much nailed on. When they set about writing their ‘Rom-Zom-Com’, cracking the States was the last thing on their minds.
