Naming The Devils
How three horror movie icons got their memorable monikers.
1) Freddie Krueger, A Nightmare On Elm Street - Derived from two characters from Wes Craven’s breakthrough movie The Last House On The Left (1972). The characters in question are Krug Stillo, a serial killer and rapist played by David A Hess, and Fred 'Weasel' Podowski, a child molester portrayed by Fred Lincoln.
2) Michael Myers, Halloween - Named in honour of the head of Miracle Films, the distribution company (“If it’s a good film, it’s a Miracle”) that had done so much to ensure the success John Carpenter’s previous picture - 1976’s Assault On Precinct 13 - when it was released in the United Kingdom.
3 ) Jason Voorhees, Friday The 13th - Screenwriter Vernon Miller had attended high school with a girl with the surname Voorhees. As the father of sons called Josh and Ian, Miller combined their names with his former classmate’s unusual moniker to ‘christen’ his unkillable killer.
