Films That Changed The World, Part One
They came, you saw and they conquered world.
Note - Another Empire (Australia) project in which we looked at movies whose impact left the world forever changed.
Fight Club (1999, David Fincher)
What is it? A sensitive man discovers the subtle joy of beating himself up.
Why? Fight Club cost $63 million ad starred one of the world’s most popular actors, Brad Pitt. That this money and star power was used to create the most anti-Hollywood movie ever to come out of LA is a testament to the vision and courage of David Fincher. Not a huge hit on its original release, Fight Club found its fortune and audience on DVD. It’s political power was such that, when the kids took to the streets in bankrupt Buenos Aires in the early noughties, many did so wearing ‘Tyler Rules’ T-shirts. Got soap?
Without it, there’d be no: Bravery in modern filmmaking nor accessible vehicles for anti-globalisation ideas. Fight Club also fuelled the DVD explosion. There also wouldn’t have been a pink slip for ambitious Fox producer Bill Mechanic but, hey, them’s the breaks.
