The year is 1999 and though we didn’t know it at the time, this was the penultimate season of Moviedrome Mk.2. Look closely at the programme throughout Season 10, however, and the signs are clear that the end is in sight.
First up, there are the credits which are just a mishmash of clips from the films airing in the season, complete with the odd moody shot of our host. They’re the sort of credits that could run at the top of any film show. A long way from Alex Cox in his King Kong costume we most certainly are.
At least, for now, we still have intros shot on location. And while the 1999 run feels a little on the short side, Mr Cousins has some pretty decent movies to discuss. Tim Burton’s Ed Wood; David Cronenberg’s Videodrome; Carlito’s Way; Sam Peckinpah’s last picture The Osterman Weekend; all this plus the season got underway with Clockers, the Spike Lee Richard Price adaptation that feels like a dry run for The Wire.
