Casablanca 2!
You must remember this... there was very nearly a sequel to Michael Curtiz's beloved picture.
Not only was a Casablanca sequel mooted but Brazzaville - as the project was known - would have been given the god ahead had Ingrid Bergman been available.
Equally astonishing is the fact that a Casablanca sequel does exist… on the page. But if you haven’t got time - or have too much common sense - to read Michael Walsh’s novel As Time Goes By, you ought to check out a second Michael Curtiz picture that functions as a kind of Casablanca reprise.
Passage To Marseille (1944) reunited the director with Casablanca stars Humphrey Bogart, Claude Rains, Peter Lorre and Sydney Greenstreet. It’s a pretty decent thriller, as it happens. However, seeing that quartet of actors working under Curtiz’s watchful eye, it’s only a matter of time before you’re mind starts wandering in the direction of Rick Blaine’s Cafe Americain…
