What it was about: Martin Scorsese’s adaptation of Nikos Kazantzakis’ novel let to large-scale protests from Manila to Milton Keynes. Invited to premiere the film at the Venice Film Festival, the director arrived with five bodyguards, one for each of the death threat he’d received. Bad, yes, and writer Paul Schrader had to come to terms with the fact that the protest in his home town of Grand Rapids, Michigan, was led by a particularly hardcore Calvinist - his father.
What it should have been about: Schrader’s Bethlehem-via-The-Bronks dialogue: “Hey, Lazarus! Where ya been?”
